Basic components of power system protection (PSP), including current transformers, voltage transformers, protective relays, circuit breakers, and trip circuits; Requirements of PSP, primary and backup protection, and various principles of power system protection; Types of relays based on relay operation mechanism, including overcurrent relays (basic types, time-current curves of time delay relays, relay coordination, and protection of a three-phase feeder), and distance relays (simple impedance distance relay and its R-X diagram, impact of fault arc resistance; MHO distance relay, three-stepped distance protection, and distance protection of a three-phase line); Differential protection and bus protection (differential protection of buses, selection of CT ratios in case of bus protection, external and internal fault, and actual behavior of a protective CT, including the circuit model of a saturated CT), providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and implement effective power system protection schemes.
