This course provides students with the fundamental concepts, principles, and analytical tools required to understand the management of banks and modern financial institutions. It begins by explaining what banks are, why they exist, and the economic roles they play in intermediation, liquidity provision, maturity transformation, and payment services. The course then examines the organizational structure of banks, their simplified balance sheet and income statement, and the key indicators used to evaluate their profitability, liquidity, risk, and overall performance. It further introduces asset-liability management, leverage, capital, and the sources of bank fragility, with particular attention to credit risk, liquidity risk, and interest-rate risk. The course concludes with an overview of risk management tools and contemporary developments in banking practice. The course also supports active learning, critical thinking, and responsible use of AI tools in banking analysis, in alignment with SDG 4 (Quality Education).
